Three tarot archetypes will shape our exploration. The Fool is our template for our most rooted, present and inhabited self. The Tower is the great disrupter and uprooting energy that initiates the fight, flight or freeze response. And Temperance is our guide for how to stir and mix together the various self-regulating practices that can restore our equilibrium.

ArcanaDance™ – The Dance of Water as Life: A Somatic Exploration of Emotional Flow & Celebration of Yemanja, Goddess of the Sea
In Brazil, February 2 is the day of celebrating and honoring Yemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian Orixá (goddess/diety) of the sea. Regarded as the Great Mother, she is guardian and protector of the waters of life, family, phases of womanhood, and of children.
In the tarot, water is the element associated with our feelings, emotions and sense of connection and belonging. Water and emotional flow are essential for life and well-being. Water ensures our existence. It purifies, cleanses, nourishes, transports and fosters life.
Inspired by Yemanja and the element she is guardian of, water, we will embody the grace, power, flow, fluidity, connection, expanse and depth of the sea using archetype, tarot, music and guided movement.
In this practice, we learn tarot through the language of the body. We listen. We write. We dance. We do ritual. Our mind is suspended, our heart is held, and our soul speaks directly to us through the primal intelligence of our body. And a new story for our lives is written.

It is an honor to celebrate Yemanjá at Balance Studio in Fremont, whose owners, Daniel Nery dos Santos Filho and Aileen Panke, have deep roots in Brazil. There is a painting of Yemanjá in the studio which captures love and reverence that both Daniel and Aileen have for this great mother goddess. We know that her essence will be with us in our dance as we honor, celebrate and are transformed by her alchemical waters.

ArcanaDance™ Presents –
The Dance of Presence: Living Fully & Deeply with Tarot & Movement
“In my life, each instance of holding nothing back is a teacher. In the realm of the body, I keep learning how to give my all in order to land in a stream of grace. In the realm of the mind, I keep learning how to break the hardened province of my little world in order to humbly join the Universe. In the realm of the heart, I keep learning that perceiving and expressing is a sacred aerobic that keeps my emotional center healthy and clean. And in the realm of spirit, I keep learning that surrendering all my dreams and wounds and personal histories, no matter how briefly, allows the fragrance of my soul to renew my sense of life as an unrepeatable mystery.” – Mark Nepo
During this ArcanaDance™ workshop we will explore, through tarot and movement, how to cultivate, strengthen and deepen our experience of presence in mind, body, heart and spirit.
Presence is a state of generosity. It is the practice of being in the moment and giving our full attention to whatever it is we are experiencing. When we are present we are saying to life, “I am here. I ready for anything.” With our arms, heart, mind and senses wide open, we bring to the here and now our awareness, attention, awe, allowing, acceptance, and appreciation.
In the tarot, the World card is the culmination of living fully and deeply, amidst an understanding of the tension between life’s limitations and potentials. As the archetype for wholeness, the World ask that we see the value, beauty, power and possibility in all of our life experiences and interactions. The World says to us, “be present with your body, breath, sensations, pain, pleasure, grief, joy, sadness, conflict, your loved ones, your adversaries, your dreams…all of these aspects contribute to the wholeness and fullness of life.”
Join us for this exploration of presence guided by the framework of the archetype of wholeness, the World.
This practice is unlike any tarot experience. We learn the tarot through the language of the body. We listen. We write. We dance. We do ritual. Our mind is suspended, our heart is held, and our soul speaks directly to us through the primal intelligence of our body. And a new story for our lives is written.

ArcanaDance™ Presents:
Dancing for Hope & Healing with Tarot & Movement
“The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change.” – Maya Angelou
In the tarot, the Star card represents the symbolic archetype of the guiding light. Light is a source of hope, faith and divine guidance.
From the personal to the collective, many of us are feeling discouraged, helpless, weary and either in or bordering on despair. Hope is a powerful antidote for these times. Hope and healing are inextricably linked. Many of us need hope to reach for healing. And when we can access healing, our hope is strengthened. Healing is not about curing what ails us, it’s about restoring our wholeness and bringing us a sense of inner peace. When we follow the threads of hope, we can guide ourselves (and others) out of despair and into a state of healing.
In this workshop we will:
- Experience the Star and it’s expression of hope and healing, through the language of the body.
- Use tarot to discover how to sustain the threads of hope in our lives.
- Co-create an embodied movement ritual of healing for our selves and fellow participants.
This practice is unlike any tarot experience. We learn the tarot through the language of the body. We listen. We write. We dance. We do ritual. Our mind is suspended, our heart is held, and our soul speaks directly to us through the primal intelligence of our body. And a new story for our lives is written.

Two and a half years ago I created a Nia routine to the music of the Broadway hit, Hamilton. More than a tale of a founding father, the story of immigrants, big dreams, love and loss spoke to me. And, it is so profound for me, as a Puerto Rican-Argentinian, to see so many beautiful people of color at the forefront of producing and starring in this show.
The focus of this routine is Aikido, one of Nia’s 9 Movement forms. Aikido reminds me of being on a journey in the wheel of life – adapting (sometimes gracefully, other times not) to life’s ups, downs, twists, turns, and our inner and outer searching for harmony. The one thing we can control in life is our inner state, our perspective and the ways in which we move through life.
In Nia, Aikido is what we call the “Dance of Harmonious Spherical Motion.” The movements reflected in a Nia class include turns, spirals, figure 8’s, swirling, blending, circles and lines, fluidity, yielding, moving from the center of our body, and most of all, noticing how our energy follows our attention. Aikido invites us to drop in and notice our internal environment, to choose where to place our attention and then engage our entire body along for the ride.
With the Hamilton routine, we pay attention to the story of a coming of age, of falling in love, of vision and ambition, of a rise to power and then a fall, loss and the opening to forgiveness and grace. Our bodies will go for the harmonious spherical ride with the story. Each step of the way, we choose what we can control, with our attention and energy. I am so proud and excited to share this body of work with you!
Move into Inner Peace with Meditation & Nia
Join Nia teachers Tai Velasquez and Jennifer Lucero-Earle for a special class that blends meditation and Nia.
Our inner and outer worlds are sometimes filled with noise and stressors that can feel unsettling and disrupt our sense of peace.
Meditation is a mindfulness-based practice that can guide us to a calm and centered state of being.
Nia is a movement-based practice that allows us to consciously guide our body, mind, heart and spirit into increased joy. In Nia, we practice the art of living meditation; noticing sensation, creating space for whatever arises and emptying so that we can be fully present in the moment.
Combined, meditation and Nia can cultivate a sustained sense of inner peace, where you feel spacious, centered, light and present.
This workshop will introduce you to a simple and soulful meditation practice that will sooth your body, mind, heart and spirit. Then, we will step onto the dance floor for a special Nia class focused on sustaining your connection to inner peace.

ArcanaDance™ – The Dance of the Dark Goddess: A Somatic Exploration of our Shadow
Dancing with our shadow can be both transformative and healing. Carl Jung said that the stories and symbols mapped out in the tarot are the “descendants of the archetypes of transformation.” He also believed that the shadow is one of the most powerful archetypal forces. The shadow is often described as our “inner demons” and can be felt as the part of us that is so overwhelming in its darkness and heaviness that we don’t know how to deal with it. The tarot offers a safe and supportive map to work with our shadow.
During this three-part series, we will use the tarot to dance with our shadow and usher it into light, using the Dark Goddess Tarot deck, by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince.
The Dark Goddess Tarot is a beautiful and powerful deck follows the traditional structure of a tarot deck, and its archetypal journey, but replaces the images with those of powerful goddess and female figures from around that world. Ellen says that the “Dark Goddess Tarot is inspired by and intended for troubled times. Not to deny pain or celebrate it, but to look at it with honesty, address it with honor, then do something about it.”
I’ve been using this deck to work with my own shadow for about two years and feel honored to be facilitating a special dance of the Dark Goddess Tarot, with Ellen Lorenzi-Prince present, at the Gaian Soul Retreat with Joanna Powell Colbert in mid-September 2016.

On February 27 we explored a path to healing through the tarot card of The Lovers, the archetype of love. More than an archetype of romantic love, the Lovers is about how we grow through the mirror of relationship, with ourselves and with others. It’s also about the choices we make to follow the call of our heart’s desire. This archetype is a rich exploration of passion, partnership, choice and saying yes to the power of love.
